During the fires and after, now, I am holding such tenderness towards my town. I remembered this piece xerox/text from a long time ago. I see it now clearly as a love letter. The furtive kind you write at the beginning, when you are bowled over with desire and longing, fascination, and awe. I know this place so much more deeply now and yet, not at all. Shout out to the Thomas Guide!
ALIEN S/HE
There’s a cosmonautical indication of the arrival.
Aint talking about no mother ship. Seems to slip more in the trip
Of where she finds
Herself/In this moment of time.
Here in Los Angeles.
Quartz City shimmer inna brink future.
Excited to think herself an alien in the city told (sold) to be built for glimmer Glamor never stammer success. Only to find instead the buildings, streets Real about a fade. Fade from worn-out tired tear. Bygone days. City gleams instead through the many peoples mingling of words, smells, sounds, tastes, sees. Mixed in the shimmer silver screen stuckup truck on billboards everywhere: Hollywood for rich white people—the jobs, the imag(in)ed stories. The actual fuckin street bending with the weight of dirty false promises; cinder-faced street punks squatting on las palmas/faces pockmarked from sugar amphetamine dream of what’s gonna be.
And she
Finds herself slipping around on quartz city oz lane enamored
with the palm trees and cypress leaves which aren’t from here neither.
The first peoples of this place, their home, have borne a lot of bullshit. I bet if you took a photograph of every single palm tree in a twenty mile square area and looked closely at the bark on the trunks you’d see the scars. Uplifted, uprooted, los angeles city of angels is named in Spanish tongue cause there’s a lot of people here who are dying to survive.
The next millennium will be about tearing down the walls of the homegrown revolution 1. Transmitting fierce fire and brimstone from eyesmouthsfists and shaking down the lie that they belong here more than we. This is all over the place, I know. Consult Thomas Guide for the warp drive.
1 Homegrown revolution was received from Mike Davis via City of Quartz. Great book.
